The Science & Technique of Crafting Low-Energy netPLUS Energy Buildings

Rich Backus, GMB CGP & Certified Passive House Consultant

Rich Backus, GMB CGP & Certified Passive House Consultant "Running a design/ build construction company in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, I find the greatest satisfaction in assisting owners as they: realize their build dreams, understand the construction process, including budgets, specifications and expectations; and anticipate energy costs (savings) from responsible building practices. Being an educator for the NAHB University of Housing courses for builders and remodelers, I find the greatest satisfaction in assisting fellow craftsmen and women to: understand the evolution of building, technology, and management systems; grasp the practical application of best practices in this new era of advanced-performance building; and anticipate the future of sustainable, net-PLUS energy, healthy homes and buildings."

Al Cobb

Al Cobb My career in building began at an early age - I can remember digging the perfect ditch with a shovel that was longer than I was tall. In the 70's and 80's I was in involved in commercial and residential construction, swinging a hammer and following the herd. A brief stint splitting atoms for Uncle Sam was followed by a period I now refer to as "The Awakening". Working in the foam and SIP industries has exposed me to countless projects that beyond the traditional and push towards super energy-efficiency.

My career as an educator began in 2006 with the formation of the SIPschool. With a passion to design and build according to the laws of science and sustainability, I enjoy spreading the gospel of the systems approach to energy-efficient construction, both in the U.S. and internationally. Some of my notable speaking engagements and projects include:

  • Developed Builder/Installer curriculum for the Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA) 2011
  • Featured Speaker/Trainer at several venues and events, including: NAHB International Builders' Show, EEBA, Timber Framers Guild, RESNET, Wood Solutions, and many others.
  • The Sustainable Research House on the National Mall
  • The first Platinum LEEDs project ever built
  • The Cherokee Central School LEED Silver Certified
  • Washington DC's first certified Passive House
  • Craftworks Studio: West Virginia's Most Energy Efficient Structure
